Above you, the cantilevered roof protects the main -- or east-looking -- entrance from the sun, wind, rain and snow. It protects our visitors and welcomes them into the building. Duane Blue Spruce

"It's interesting how the form of the building came about. Douglas Cardinal, being a Native architect from Canada, he envisioned this building as a natural rock form that was sort of carved by wind and water over time. It's almost as if the building was already on the site and it needed to be revealed and that was also in keeping with Douglas' organic design style. The inspiration for this cantilevered roof actually came from places like Mesa Verde where there's a natural rock formation that juts out above you and protects you."
