Get the Story

Stainless steel people welcome residents and visitors exiting I-90. Providing gateways to the Island stemmed from Town Center planning in the 1990s. The Gateway project culminated with this series of steel-cut figures, one of Mercer Island's most recognizable landmarks. The artist creates flat drawings and cuts them out in steel like paper dolls.

Did you know?

You might not recognize Garth Edwards' name, but you've probably seen his work. In Seattle, look up the steel gate at Metro's Pioneer Square station, or look down at one of the dozen manhole covers throughout the city, including at the west entrance to Seattle Center. The artist's whimsical cartoon figures and animals he designs delight audiences around the Puget Sound.
