About the Artwork

In designing the bronze entry gates to the Washington Park Arboretum, Tsutakawa incorporated elements found within the arboretum itself: pods, leaves, tentacles, and flowers. Says the artist: "It was tricky to build all those compound curves and reverse curves. Reversing the curve and making the wavy line is doubly difficult; but it is doubly strong, too."

Tsutakawa, internationally recognized as one of contemporary art's foremost sculptors and painters, designed his first local installation of bronze gates in 1967. They can be found in the courtyard of the Lake City Branch of the Seattle Public Library .
