Innovation Across the Years
Kainotomien. New cuttings. When Xenophon put two words together to introduce a concept for the business of the Athenian state in the 3rd Century BCE, it was the genesis for how we today consider innovation. Xenophon's use refers to the appropriation of private slave labor for public mining projects and incorporates the political and religious weight of the term, weight that would shape the direction of the term for nearly 2500 years. Sometimes political, sometimes social, sometimes religious, but rarely positive, today's definition of innovation has a similar meaning to the past shown here, with widely different contexts.
