Artist Statement

The Iroquois of the eastern woodlands and shores believe the present land was formed on the back of a great turtle, with the help of birds and many other animals. Turtle became the entire North American continent, supporting our environment, culture and history, past and future. Ancient Hindus and Chinese, too, believed the world was supported by a giant tortoise. We hope our sculpture of Turtle Island inspires increased care for this land that carries us.
