The five Otters that live in this exhibit are brothers. They moved to Wellington Zoo from Perth Zoo in June 2015. Otters are social animals and you will often see all five brothers moving around together. Asian Small-Clawed otters are the smallest Otter species and the only one allowed into New Zealand.
Asian Small-Clawed Otters are great swimmers. They are kept warm by an insulating layer of soft fur underneath their top layer of water-repellent hair. Unlike other Otters who use their mouths, they catch their prey with their feet, often foraging at the edge of a river.
IUCN Conservation Status
Asian Small-Clawed Otters are the most vocal Otter species, and have around 12-13 different calls.
